Who AI names for “best digital marketing agencies”

Measured, not ranked by us. We put this question to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews repeatedly over 30 days and recorded every company each one named. Where an engine named nobody at that depth, the cell is left empty.

The answer, by engine

Four engines, four different shortlists

Read across a row and you are looking at four systems answering the same question differently. That is the finding, not a defect in the measurement.

Rankxa production data, 30 days to 11 September 2026. An empty cell means that engine did not name a company at that depth, which is information rather than missing data. BusySeed appears here only where the measurement places us.

One pattern worth naming rather than tidying away: Google AI Overviews often answers with directories, review sites and publishers where the chat engines answer with companies. We report what each engine actually returned, so that column frequently looks unlike the other three. That difference is the finding, and it is why the agreement between Google AI Overviews and the chat engines sits near 1%.

How much they agree

Agreement on this question

Overlap is the share of named brands two engines have in common on the same prompt, averaged across every prompt we could compare.

Engine pairPrompts comparedBrand overlap
Claude vs Google AI Overviews250.3%
Gemini vs Google AI Overviews250.6%
Google AI Overviews vs ChatGPT271.1%
Gemini vs ChatGPT1342.9%
Claude vs ChatGPT2433.3%
Claude vs Gemini1524.0%

Across all comparable prompts in our data, the three chat engines agree with each other about 11% of the time and Google AI Overviews agrees with any of them around 1% of the time.

How a company gets onto a list like this

Four things decide whether an engine names you

None of them is paying us, and none of them is a ranking factor in the traditional sense. This is the same sequence we run on every AI marketing engagement.

Can the engine fetch you at all

The gate that sits upstream of everything else.

  • A site that disallows OAI-SearchBot cannot appear in ChatGPT search answers
  • It is binary, usually accidental, and often a same day fix
  • We check it first on every account, before measuring anything

Is there something to retrieve

A model quotes pages that answer the question directly.

  • One page per real buying question, answered in the first paragraph
  • Company and vendor pages take roughly 60% of commercial query citations
  • Schema markup so the facts are read rather than inferred

Does the wider web name you

The strongest correlate of AI visibility we know of.

  • Branded web mentions correlate 0.664 with AI visibility
  • Backlinks correlate 0.218, so a link without a naming is worth less
  • An unlinked mention still counts and no backlink tool will show it to you

Are you measuring the right thing

Crawl volume and citation are different numbers.

  • GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect training data and predict nothing
  • Page count explains 73% of crawl volume and correlates 0.17 with visibility
  • See AI SEO for how we separate the two
