Top Three Ways Digital Marketing Agencies Can Show Their Support This Pride Month

.

Happy Pride Month! June is dedicated to celebrating members of the LGBTQIA+ community and remembering those that fought for the community's rights. Businesses across the country make statements and showcase their support online. Digital marketing agencies can join in as well! Here are the top three ways you can support Pride Month.

It's June! Not only is this the start of summer, it's also Pride Month where we celebrate the members of the LGBTQIA+ community and remember all those who fought for its rights. Some of the largest companies in the country make statements each year about Pride and focus their efforts on supporting the community. As a digital marketing agency, you likely serve a variety of clients. Odd are, many people you work with are part of the community. Looking for ways to show your support? Here are three of our favorite tips!

Make Donations To LGBTQIA+ Charities

The best way to show support during Pride Month is to put your money where your mouth is. Posts and statements are always appreciated and certainly express your support, but actions speak louder than words. During this month, consider donating a portion of your profits (or a set amount) to LGBTQIA+ charities. These organizations help to support queer people who are victims of hate crimes, disowned by their family, looking to escape countries that view non-straight relationships as a crime, etc. You should donate, and you should also encourage your clients to as well. While you're at it, why not encourage anyone who sees your posts to donate whatever they can? Donations are what keep these crucial LGBTQ organizations afloat. They are doing incredibly difficult work, and they need support from businesses and individuals to achieve their goals. Here are a few charities/organizations digital marketing agencies should learn more about:

  • The Trevor Project: The Trevor Project focuses on real-time crisis intervention for LGBTQIA+ youth. Using lifelines, chats, and texts, the Trevor project provides 24/7 support to queer people under 25 who may be struggling with their mental health. Donations keep the service running so that the lifeline is never not available.
  • Center for Black Equity: The Center For Black Equity is considered the leading center of Black LGBTQ+ equality. With so much discussion and action being taken against racism and discrimination, donating to this organization is a wonderful way to help our country move past its prejudices and head in the right direction.
  • OutRight Action International: Only 29 countries in the world have some kind of laws protecting the LGBTQIA+ community. OutRight Action International is the only LGBTQ+ organization that has a presence in the United Nations, where it fights for rights of LGBTQ+ members around the world.
  • Trans Lifeline: Similar to The Trevor Project, Trans Lifeline is a 24/7 call service specifically for transgender people. The trans community (especially those of color) is particularly at risk for attack and discrimination. Trans Lifeline is there to help them cope.
  • The Marsha P. Johnson Institute: Marsha P. Johnson was a key player at the Stonewall Riot. She was a self-proclaimed drag queen and transgender woman who created STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with her friend Sylvia Rivera. The Marsha P. Johnson Institute supports Black trans people and defends their rights.
  • Human Rights Campaign: Considered to be one of the largest advocacy groups in the LGBTQ+ space, the Human Rights Campaign works on everything from adoption to HIV and AIDS and beyond. Supporting them supports every aspect of LGBTQIA+ life.

Openly Show Support In Posts, Blogs, Photos, Etc.

Digital marketing agencies have the capabilities to create posts on just about any digital platform! This gives you the chance to educate viewers on LGBTQIA+ history and culture. In many instances, hatred stems from ignorance. You may think that in 2021 everyone is fully aware of queer culture, but many people (particularly younger people) are not exposed to it regularly. Families may avoid discussing LGBTQ life with their children for reasons like religious views, fear, deep-rooted dissemination, and more. You can help these people learn the truth about queer culture by posting on social media, writing blogs, and spreading the word whenever possible. Digital marketers understand what it takes to make a post catch someone's attention. Put those marketing skills to good use and create a series of Pride Month posts that viewers will stop to read through. Many people are of the belief that "silence is violence." If you don't openly condemn discrimination and loudly support the LGBTQIA+ community, people will assume that you are against them. This will not be good for your reputation, and people might assume the worst of you even if you are a proud ally/supporter. Consumers want to see proof these days, so don't be afraid to create posts, change your profile picture, update your cover photo, or otherwise explicitly express your support for human rights.

Educate Yourselves On Queer History And Commit To Supporting The Community Even After Pride Month Is Over

Of course, if you want to educate others, you first must know the information yourself. This might be the most important recommendation we can give any digital marketing agency. Before you post about or discuss Pride, you need to make sure you understand the history and the culture. The only thing worse than not speaking up at all is spreading false information. There are many harmful stereotypes about the LGBTQIA+ community, some of which are so mainstream you may take them as fact. Make sure to fact check everything before you talk about it. Find reputable sources (there are plenty out there) and educate the world about the lesser known or lesser-understood parts of the community. Can you name five events that played key roles in getting us to where we are today? Who are some of the most influential people involved in the movement? During this Pride Month, we recommend sitting down as a team to watch documentaries, read through articles, hold discussions, etc. about the true meaning and history behind pride. Simply throwing a rainbow banner on your profile picture isn't enough; you should have a grasp on why Pride came about how the community has suffered, and what can be done to move us down a better path. Once you learn more about why Pride is about so much more than parades and parties, you'll start to see it as something that should be celebrated every single day. Continue educating yourselves past June, and consider continuing your support efforts all year round. Digital marketers get to learn about and create content about many different topics. Why not make social issues one of them?

Digital marketing agencies may be hesitant to support Pride Month because they deal with clients. To that we say "if your clients disagree with your team on such a fundamental problem, do you really want them as a client?" If your digital agency brands itself as charitable, socially-conscious, and in-the-know, make sure you showcase that in all you do. You can't post as your agency in support of Pride while simultaneously having your digital marketers post for clients who are anti-LGBTQ. Not only should that feel morally wrong to you, but it can also destroy your reputation should it get out. Do your part and use digital marketing as a platform for spreading love and education, not hate and cookie-cutter rainbow posts.
