Guide

How to rank in AI search, when there is no ranking to win.

An assistant returns one answer naming a handful of companies. There is no page two, and eleventh place looks exactly like absence. Four things decide whether you are in that paragraph, and they have to happen in order.

What correlates with AI visibility
FactorCorrelation
Branded web mentions0.664
Branded anchors0.527
Branded search volume0.392
Backlinks0.218
Total page count0.17

Ahrefs, across 75,000 brands. The factor easiest to buy is the weakest one.

The method

Four steps, and the order is the method

Each step is wasted without the one before it. Most programs start at step three, which is why most programs report activity rather than movement.

1

Clear the retrieval gate

Read your robots.txt the way each engine reads it. Precedence is longest match on path, not first match, and a missing agent block falls through to the wildcard. A site opted out of OAI-SearchBot cannot appear in ChatGPT search answers at all.

2

Record a baseline per engine

Your real buying questions across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, recorded separately. Without this you cannot tell improvement from the natural variance between two identical asks.

3

Write pages a model can quote

One page per real question, answered in the first paragraph, with schema so the facts are read rather than inferred. Company and vendor pages take roughly 60% of citations on commercial queries.

4

Earn the naming

Coverage where your company is named in body text, not only linked. Branded mentions correlate 0.664 with visibility. An unlinked mention still counts and is invisible to every backlink tool on the market.

Crawl is not citation

Three kinds of bot, three different meanings

The single most common mistake in this category is treating AI crawler traffic as a success metric. The bot you see most is the one that matters least.

CrawlerFires whenPredicts citation
GPTBot, ClaudeBotBulk training crawlNo
OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBotSearch index membershipEligibility gate only
ChatGPT-User, Claude-UserA live human question pulls your pageClosest real signal

Publishers already act on the distinction: among the top 10,000 sites, 17.6% block GPTBot but only 6.6% block OAI-SearchBot. They are refusing training while permitting answering.

What actually drives crawl volume

Measured across 2,899 domains, the predictors of GPTBot volume are site size at 0.54, Googlebot activity at 0.48, internal links at 0.26, referring domains at 0.19, organic keywords at 0.15 and Domain Rating at 0.11. Note what tops that list and where it sits on the visibility table above: page count is the strongest driver of crawl and the weakest predictor of being named.

Why a single score is useless

The engines disagree with each other, including with themselves

Same prompt, same 30 day window, comparing which brands each engine names. This is our own production data across 9.8 million recorded brand mentions.

Engine pairPrompts comparedBrand overlap
Claude vs ChatGPT52,75610.6%
Gemini vs ChatGPT25,06110.9%
Claude vs Gemini34,26111.2%
Google AI Overviews vs ChatGPT1,2731.0%
Google AI Overviews vs Claude1,3010.8%
Google AI Overviews vs Gemini1,2201.0%

Gemini and Google AI Overviews are both Google products and agree with each other no more than either agrees with a competitor model. Google AI Overviews also names about 3.3 brands per answer against 6.1 to 7.2 on the chat engines, so the same absence means different things on different surfaces.

Questions

Common questions about ranking in AI search

How do I rank in AI search?

There is no ranking to win, so the goal is being named. Four things decide it, in order: the engines must be able to fetch your pages at answer time, your pages must answer real buying questions directly enough for a model to quote, the wider web must name your company by name, and you must measure each engine separately because they disagree. Skipping the first step makes the other three worthless, and it is the step almost everyone skips.

Does publishing more pages improve AI visibility?

It improves crawl volume and barely touches visibility. Across 560,695 AI crawl requests, page count alone explains 73% of the variation in crawl attention. Across 75,000 brands, total page count correlates just 0.17 with actual AI visibility, while branded web mentions correlate 0.664. The metric that is easiest to buy is the one that works least, which is why content volume strategies feel productive and change nothing.

What is the difference between GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot?

GPTBot collects training data and its visits predict nothing about whether you get cited. OAI-SearchBot decides whether you are eligible to appear in ChatGPT search answers at all, and OpenAI states that a site opted out of it will not appear. ChatGPT-User fires when a live human question pulls your page, which is the closest thing to a real citation signal. Any tool that adds these into one AI traffic number is reporting a figure that predicts nothing.

Does my Google ranking carry over to ChatGPT?

Far less than most people assume. Ahrefs found only about 8% of ChatGPT citations rank in Google top ten for the same prompt. Strong traditional SEO still helps, because Googlebot activity correlates 0.48 with AI crawl volume, but it is not sufficient and it is not the same work. You need both, run as two programs with two measurements.

Which pages get cited most?

Your own. Company and vendor pages account for roughly 60% of citations on commercial queries, against about 26% for third party listicles. That is the opposite of the traditional SEO instinct to chase placement on someone else round up post. Write the answer page yourself, answer the question in the first paragraph, and add schema so the facts are read rather than inferred.

How do I measure whether it is working?

Per engine, weekly, against a baseline recorded before you started. Track whether you are named at all, how often across repeated asks, and how early you appear. Never a blended score: in our production data the three chat engines agree with each other about 11% of the time and Google AI Overviews agrees with any of them around 1%, so an average of the four is true of none of them. See Rankxa for how we measure it.
