Why Your Social Media Marketing Team Doesn’t Need to Be Local

The growing trend these days is “going local.” While this is a wonderful way to support small local businesses, it is not very beneficial when it comes to choosing a social media marketing agency. Here are some reasons why you shouldn’t limit yourself to local digital marketing agencies.

Did you know that wherever there is internet you can access social media?

That seems like a silly question but some business owners seem to overlook this very true fact in their hunt for social media marketing agencies. One of the most searched terms when it comes to social media marketing is “digital marketing near me.” Going local is a growing trend for consumers in all industries. The idea behind the movement is to bolster sales of

small, family-owned businesses

to help them avoid bankruptcy brought on by encroaching behemoth companies. However, if your business is looking for a digital marketing agency it is actually wise to look outside your local borders and stop using location as a deciding factor in who you hire.

Digital marketing is a field that can operate as easily with an international client as it can with the business down the road. The goal of marketing your business is to gain customers and make money right? If you limit your search for an agency to a radius of only a few miles, you could find yourself paying more than you need to, and that seems counter-intuitive to the plan don’t you agree? Just because an agency is local does not mean it will do more for your business than a company across the country can. Do your research into digital marketing agencies to find one that fits your budget, needs, and company culture. Read on to find out why you don’t need to work with a local agency.

Not all agencies are created equal

It is very admirable to want to look at “marketing near me (you)” when you’re ready to advertise your business. However, you could be doing yourself and your company a great disservice. If you only look locally, you greatly reduce the options available to you, and you could get stuck with an agency who isn’t a good fit. The content you receive may not be what you want, the price could be too high, and the results could be disappointing. While you certainly could have a local agency that is very good at what they do, changing your search from “marketing near me” to “top marketing agencies” could find you a much better match at a much better price. You are entrusting your brand to the social media team, so make sure it’s a winning one.

Social Media is online

Again, this may seem obvious, but it’s worth discussing regardless. Social media platforms are entirely online. Therefore, where there is internet, there is social media access. There’s no need to search for “social media marketing in New York” when an agency in California (or Warwick, RI wink wink) can accomplish all the same things for you. Unlike many fields, digital marketing can be done from literally anywhere, so long as there is internet access. It shouldn’t matter to you whether the company marketing your business is in the same town, state, or even time zone if they are handling your digital material. Social media agencies who know what they are doing will not face any more difficulty in posting on your brand’s profiles than an agency in the office complex next door. Take advantage of the world wide-ness of the internet, and find the right agency, not the closest agency.

Just because an agency is local to you does not mean they will produce better content.

There is a misconception that if you work with a local agency they will do better work because they know your brand more. While there are instances where this is true, you cannot assume it will always work that way. I’m sure if you think about it there are plenty of local businesses you are aware of but have never stepped foot in. Agencies can be the same way. Remember: just because they know of you does not mean they know about you.

Communication is not necessarily easier with a local agency.

Much like social media, communication can be done entirely over the internet or via phone call. True, face-to-face meetings may not be possible if you are far from your agency, but Skype calls, conference calls, emails, and texts can all be avenues used to ask and answer the same questions you would ask in a one-on-one meeting. Most of the time, making it harder to have constant communication with your agency can be beneficial for both parties. Social media marketing is not typically an industry of immediate results, so if you are constantly contacting your agency for updates because communication is convenient, it can be extremely frustrating for them. If you choose to go with a company further from home and set up weekly meetings, the team has a full week to collect data and insights so they can accurately answer questions you may have about their performance.

Now that you have some idea as to why you don’t need to work with a local digital marketing agency, let’s take a look at some examples of good and bad internet searches:

Bad: digital marketing agency Chicago

Good: digital marketing agency

Bad: Los Angeles social media marketing

Good: social media marketing

Bad: digital marketing near me

Good: digital marketing

See the trend? When searching for a digital marketing agency, there is no need to specify a location. Stop focusing on “marketing near me” and look more closely at what other marketing agencies can do for you. For help deciding if you should hire an agency, check out
